Pat, I'm not sure about the chestnuts, but I'll check. I've heard the Leipzig Markt is the real hammer. Maybe we should plan a visit, but it's not on our list yet. c
Forschungsjahr began life as the journal of a sabbatical year in Germany, 2008-09. The sabbatical came to an end, and I returned to my home university, but the blog lives on, retaining a name that doesn't make a lot of sense right now, but may again in 2015-16.Until then, I'll continue to write posts about stuff that lies at the intersection of my personal experiences with German culture and society.
I teach Painting and Drawing at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. My interest in Germany stems from a year I spent at the Universität Essen as a Fulbright scholar in 1994-95. I exhibit my paintings at galleries in both the US and Germany. My cv and a complete portfolio of my work can be see at:

I'm beyond envious that you'll be going to the Weihnachtsmarkt. When does the Essen market begin? Do they sell punsch and chestnuts there?
